30/70 Film & Digital Photography

The timeless beauty of film photography

“To be in your children’s memories tomorrow, you have to be in their lives today.”

— Barbara Johnson

So what is a mixed film and digital photoshoot look like?

Two cameras

I’ll have two cameras with me; my digital camera and a film camera loaded with a full reel of 35mm film. You won’t notice me switching between cameras, but I’ll be sure to capture key moments on both.

Digital gallery delivery

You’ll get both film and digital photos delivered in an online digital gallery, about six weeks after our time together. These will be high resolution that you can print.

There are no surprise costs

You’ll get the nostalgic magic of film and the guarantee of digital in one seamless experience. There are no extra costs for film and development.

Film photo gallery

Using a 35mm film in colour, I will capture some nostalgic family memories you can treasure forever. Each reel captures 36 photos so this guarantees you a whole reel of film, with a chance for some duds (people do blink after all!).

Digital photo gallery

Using the security of digital photography, and editing to focus on a filmic feel, a digital gallery gives you additional security and the bulk of your images from the candid session. This allows more freedom for low light and experimental shots where you can see the results in camera.

FAQs

Are the film photos in this package real film — not just a filter?
Yes! Every film image is shot on a real Canon film camera using Kodak Gold or Kodak Ultramax. Nothing is digitally filtered or edited to mimic a film look. These are genuine analogue photographs, developed at a professional lab and scanned for delivery.

What is the difference between film and digital family photos?

Digital family photos are sharp, clean, and polished. Film family photos have a naturally warm, grainy quality — softer tones, richer colour, and that timeless, nostalgic character you can’t replicate digitally. Together in one gallery, the two formats give your family photos real depth and variety.

How many film vs digital photos are included in the package?
This package includes 30 film photos and 70 digital photos — 100 images in total. The digital images capture the full story of your session, while the film photos tend to be the standout, frame-worthy moments.

How long does it take to receive film and digital family photos?
Both your film and digital images are delivered together in an online gallery within approximately 6 weeks of your session. Film requires lab development and scanning before editing can begin, which is why turnaround is longer than a digital-only shoot — but everything arrives together so you’re not waiting twice.

Can I request which moments are captured on film?
The decision of when to shoot on film is part of the creative process. I reach for the film camera intuitively — typically for quieter, more intimate moments that suit its look. Trusting that process is what makes the final gallery feel intentional rather than random.

Will my film and digital family photos look consistent together?
They’re edited to feel cohesive, but they will look distinctly different — and that’s the point. Film brings warmth, grain, and texture that digital cannot replicate. Delivered together in one online gallery, the two formats complement each other and make for a richer, more layered set of family photos.

What should I wear to a film family photoshoot?
