Winter photoshoots are seriously under-rated, especially in Pretoria and Johannesburg.
As my Spring bookings start rolling in, it makes me reflect on the magic of winter in Gauteng and how under-rated it is for a family photo session. Here’s why:
- Golden hour is at a better time: With sunrise at about 7am and sunset around 5.30pm, the golden hour is at a more reasonable time for families. If you’re booking with me for winter, we’re looking at around 7am for a morning session, and around 4pm for an afternoon session. This is great for little kids.
- Brown grass! Give me beautiful brown-textured grasses any day. They make for a beautiful backdrop and don’t reflect on the face like green grass does.
- No afternoon thunderstorms! Our dry winter means there’s no dodging rainy afternoons and muddy parks (especially in Gauteng).
- South African winters are quite mild. A light jersey or long sleeves will tide you over for one brief hour as you capture those memories.
- The light is gorgeous. Winter sun is soft and golden and photographs beautifully.
